Truth

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

Mitch

"Mitch"

Darling little Mitch explores the vast green sea that is his world. Endlessly devoted to his person, Mitch would follow Michaela around the yard; bounding through tall grass, scooting up the nearest tree, leaping at insects and butterflies. His was an exhuberant spirit, spreading joy with his infectious enthusiasm, who sadly left us far too soon. Mitch became suddenly, violently ill, and after running a series of tests that left us with a grim prognosis, the heartbreaking decision to have Mitch euthanized was made; compounded only by the heartbreaking task of having to tell my young daughter that we could not save her best friend.

Mitch is remembered fondly, and he still brings us happiness when we recall the sweet days we spent with him, and how he taught us so much about the simple joys in life: bounding through tall grass, climbing trees, chasing butterflies, and most of all, friendship.

Mallard Hen with Ducklings

"Mallard Hen with Ducklings"

Like most areas around here near the water, an abundance of Mallard ducks can be found, especially if they can get a handout from a kindly human - though like most of us, they shouldn't be eating those kind of "treats".

I look forward to them visiting when we are at the boat, as I am quite fond of them. I have a flock of twenty some odd domestic ducks to prove it. They are such cheerful, animated little creatures.

The other day after Michael and I had been out on the sea-doo (my water pony), a group of hens came up to me as I waited for Michael to go get the trailer. One was so friendly she climbed right onto the back of the sea-doo.

The hen pictured above visits our dock regularly with the remaining members of her brood. They are just darling, and just about full grown. They like to follow me around while I'm swimming. Hoping for one of those handouts, I'm sure.

"Toad"

One of my favorite little critters are toads. This year I am fortunate to have plenty of them living in my various flower gardens. One in particular gets a little irritated when I water my rudbeckia, as he sleeps in the dirt there, and does not appreciate his daily shower. This guy was found on a walk along one of the trails at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge.

Featured Art

"Days End at the Point"

The sun begins to sink beyond the horizon, leaving the sky washed in brilliant, fleeting color.

This image was taken as we came back into port, the sun setting beyond the pier, bringing an end to a fun filled day out on the lake. As summer winds down, days such as this become numbered and precious, as fleeting as the golden hues the sun has left in the sky.

Faith

"Faith"

I began August with an image of my two boys, Jordan and Caleb, basking in the square of sunlight falling on the kitchen floor, their bond as best buds already securely established in the short time Caleb had been with us. It seems, then, only fitting to end the dog days of August with an image of my best girl, Faith.

Once settled in here, I was missing having a dog, and found Faith at the shelter at our local humane society - the same place we adopted Jordan and Caleb from - where, at age five, Faith had already been back and forth to several times. She was my Christmas present that year. At age fourteen, Faith has been with me nearly nine years, and is the sweetest soul. She has a bit more trouble getting around these days, but still has all the exhuberance of her younger self. Though she seems rather serious here - her smile just lights my day, her presence a happy constant in my life.

A Good Cut

"A Good Cut"

Oh, the smell of fresh hay...(unless, of course, you have allergies)

This is an image I took a couple of summers ago in the hayroom of my barn after we put in a new load. It is a scene that I see several times a day, between morning and evening feedings, yet never tire of - the comforting, familiar sights and sounds and smells of being in that old barn with my horses.

Biplane Dusting

Upon reaching the main intersection at the end of our road the other day, my timing for once was fairly perfect. And, I had my camera with me.

I have enjoyed watching this guy fly his old biplane since I was a little kid. Today he was dusting the field diagonally across the road, flying straight at me as he manuvered it by buildings and power lines. This image was taken through my bug encrusted (you can't avoid it living out here) windshield. As for the crop dusting, I'm not advocating for or against it. But, boy, do I love that plane.

Thanks, Bud

"Thanks, Bud"

Of little girls and horses...

This piece is quite possibly the one of greatest sentimental value to me. A tender moment is exchanged between my then two year old daughter Michaela, and my beloved horse, Mi Choyce. In appreciation of her ride, Michaela marched directly into the hay room, came back with an armload of hay which she stuffed into his feed bucket, and patted him gently on the head.

That inexplicable connection between little girls and horses, captured in this heartwarming image. An enduring reminder of one of the simplest of joys, friendship.

Featured Art

"Safe Harbor"

Summers for us mean a lot of time spent on the lake. Having grown up spending summer vacation at our cottage, and Michael spending his on his father's boat, then his own - our mutual love for the water has carried on that summer tradition with our family.

Having set out with the girls for one of our favorite spots, we returned to port as the weather began to change, with no place to take shelter inbetween our destination and home. Our decision proved wise, for as the girls were swimming, I could see lightning strikes north of us over the lake. Generally, storms will come in from the west or east, but this particular storm came in with a vengeance off the north shore. Although we were not far from port, we barely made it in, and many of the sailboats and even the fishing boats that were out, weathered the brunt of it on the lake. As Michael took us in, I stood on the deck making sure I captured as much of it as I could before the rain came. It started to pour just as we made it to our dock.

Our featured art for the month is an image of one the fishing boats that came into port behind us, just as the storm overtakes them.

Ducklings

Isabelle and five of her six ducklings hatched yesterday afternoon.

Our Rouen hen, Isabelle, successfully hatched her first eggs yesterday. Isabelle is one of the first ducks we got , now two years old. Michaela and I hatched out four eggs last year, two taken from Katie and two saved from Gillies nest. They were all Cayuga/Black Swedish crosses, and all look like Cayugas. This is our first successful hen raised group. Four of them look like they are Rouen crosses, and the other two look to be Ancona crosses. I'll post some better pics once Isabelle lets me get a better look. She is still keeping them all to herself at this point, and also has more eggs in her nest that have yet to hatch.

Featured Art

"Ben"

Our featured art for the month is "Ben", our newest release in the G.R.A.S.P. series. He is a beautiful Great Pyrenees currently awaiting adoption. A portion of the sales from this print will be donated to G.R.A.S.P. to help give other dogs and cats like Ben a second chance.

Although Ben was only with us a few short days, like his size, he made a big impression on everyone he met. He is truly a sweetheart. My two boys, Jordan and Caleb, miss the rough and tumble play that was non stop from the moment he arrived. What a trio! This white goliath, dwarfing my 80lb setter/hound and 40lb lab/x pup. It is definately a little quieter since he's been gone. All the best, Gentle Ben.

Missing Bass

After The Silence Broken's last show at The Montage in Rochester, New York on April 26th, John's bass came up missing. It is an Ibanez 4 string SR810 Trans Cherry. The wood grain pattern is very distinctive. There is no serial or model number on the back of the headstock, which is unusual. It was in a hard case, covered in stickers - most of them local bands. This model/color is quite rare.

If you have any information, please contact John. You can also email me at solacepointe@equinesite.com. Thanks.

Featured Art

"Untitled"

A trio of Belgian draft horses plow under the remains of last years harvest, preparing the field for Spring planting.

Perhaps it is because one of the first equines I was introduced to as a child was an aged Clydesdale my friends family kept as a companion to their riding horse, that I have felt this affinity toward the gentle giants - the draft horses. Two of my own are drafts - Chief, an aged Belgian gelding and Manny, a Percheron/TB. Our featured art for the month is a new release featuring three beautiful Belgians demonstrating at the annual old fashioned days put on by our local draft horse club.
