Quietude

Here in Western New York, we have been fortunate to have had temperate, sunlit weekends perfect for viewing the spectacular foliage this fall. On one of our recent outings, we came across this little marsh tucked amongst the pines along a wooded trail; the stately trees perfectly reflected on its surface, the tranquil stillness seemingly tangible in this month's featured art:

Letchworth Park

Spent the day at Letchworth State Park, one of New York State's natural treasures and one we frequently visit. Located approximately 35 miles Southwest of Rochester, the park encompasses 14,350 acres along the Genesee River. Here are a few images:

Named after William Letchworth, who first purchased the land in 1859 and made the Glen Iris - now an inn - his home up until his death in 1910.

Prior to his death, Letchworth offered his home and thousand acre estate to the state of New York as a public park, arranging for the preservation of the gorge and surrounding woodlands.

The park boasts several beautiful waterfalls, with Inspirational Falls being the highest with a drop of 350'. The crest is only a foot wide and the waterfall itself is seasonal. Taughannock Falls is generally recognized as the highest waterfall in the state as well as in the Northeast. The major waterfalls - the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls are located in Portage Canyon.

The layers of bedrock exposed in the gorge are comprised of mostly shale, with some layers of limestone and sandstone. Part of an ancient inland sea, marine fossils from the Devonian age can be found within these layers of stone.

As well as magnificent scenic views along its' hiking trails, Letchworth Park offers campsites, fishing areas, picnic shelters, hunting, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking, and sports facilities.

There are also guided tours, lectures, concessions, gift shops, dining and lodging available. The park also hosts many special events and festivals throughout the year.

There is so much to do and see within the park that, despite having been there many times, I still feel as though I've only begun to explore it. Each visit brings something new and wonderful, as does each season.

Highland Park

Spent the morning at Highland Park. Tulips, daffodils and muscari are in bloom. A few lilacs are starting to open; azaleas, forsythia and other shrubs are in full bloom. The magnolia trees were just gorgeous. Fortunately the rain held off during my walk; it started to pour just as I was leaving. Here are a few images:

Spring @ Solace Place

Everywhere around us there are signs of Spring. Nature is bursting to life once more. On my daily walks with the dogs, one of our favorite things to do is explore the back woods. While they hunt for little critters to chase, you can find me exploring for wildflowers. Here are a few pics from one of our recent outings:

Featured Art

Although taken last Spring after a late snow storm caught many returning migrating birds off guard, I was prompted to use this image for January after sighting a robin who has appearently, this year, never left. We've only had a few days of milder weather recently, and there he's been - teasing me as if Spring were right around the corner. Wishful thinking. On both our parts.

"Safe Harbor"

Summers for us mean a lot of time spent on the lake. Having grown up spending summer vacation at our cottage, and Michael spending his on his father's boat, then his own - our mutual love for the water has carried on that summer tradition with our family.

Having set out with the girls for one of our favorite spots, we returned to port as the weather began to change, with no place to take shelter inbetween our destination and home. Our decision proved wise, for as the girls were swimming, I could see lightning strikes north of us over the lake. Generally, storms will come in from the west or east, but this particular storm came in with a vengeance off the north shore. Although we were not far from port, we barely made it in, and many of the sailboats and even the fishing boats that were out, weathered the brunt of it on the lake. As Michael took us in, I stood on the deck making sure I captured as much of it as I could before the rain came. It started to pour just as we made it to our dock.

Our featured art for the month is an image of one the fishing boats that came into port behind us, just as the storm overtakes them.

Open Edition. Unstretched canvas print. Premier gloss finish. Image: 16 x 10.6". Museum and Gallery Wrap also available. $125.00. To purchase, click here.
